LCT Options

I would have posted this Monday but we had no internet service. It finally got restored yesterday. Amazing how dependent we've become on our internet, isn't it?!

Last week I showed several layouts of my Log Cabin Triangles blocks that I had played with at camp. This was my preferred layout:
LCTs, Preferred Layout

The problem is, these are 9" blocks so as shown this layout would finish at 56" by 63". That's a little skimpy to be practical. I don't have any more of the colored fabrics left so I can't make any more blocks in these colors.

One option would be to add a third color to the mix and make more blocks. I have plenty of the low volume fabrics so I can make the new blocks look consistent with the existing ones. Here's an EQ rendering of what it would look like with teal blocks added. This would be 63" x 72", a better size for a lap quilt.
3 colors, 9" blocks, 63" x 72"

Another option would be to add another round of logs to the original blocks, making them 10-1/2". Here's how it would look if I made the blocks larger:
2 colors, 10-1/2" blocks, 63" x 73.5"

By making the blocks larger, the proportion of colored triangle to low volume background changes.

  • In the original layout, you can see that the triangles overlap by half of their base: 9" blocks, 6" triangles, 3" overlap. The colored rings are strong diagonals.
  • With the added logs, there is much less overlap. 10-1/2" blocks, 6" triangles, 1-1/2" overlap. This makes the triangle points stick out more, like pennants. It also creates more negative space.
So, which option do you like and why?

  1. They are all great, but I like the addition color added.

  2. Oh, Sister, tough decision; either is nice. The overlap makes an interesting detail, but the second version has a more modern feel with the larger negative space. I know you'll make it perfect.

  3. I like them all, but the third one the best....not sure why. Maybe the extra negative space?....also the extra colour is nice.

  4. I really like the addition on the third color! It adds another dimension to the quilt! It's going to be gorgeous!!

  5. I like the addition of the third colour. It is more artistically appealing. In design you are always told to work in odd numbers, three strong colours instead of 2.

  6. Adding the teal brings much more interest. Those colors all give it an overall restful tone.

  8. I really like the teal added, too, but teal is one of my favorite colors. :) My eye moves around the quilt more with the third color.

  9. I love the 3rd color option, and teal works wonderfully with the other 2

  10. I will be no help. I think both options are stunning and I would never be able to decide. Flip a coin? :)

  14. Hmmm. . . add the third color AND make the blocks bigger?

  15. While they are both awesome, I like the third color best. When it is being used more of the pattern will show.

  17. I like the additon of the teal. I really like color, so I'd more of it and less of the low volume fabrics. Though both options would work out well.

  18. If it's not too late, I definitely love the option with the teal - partly because of the bright fabric, partly because I love how the extra overlap makes the lines look.
