Binding Test

A very little finish today:
In the previous post below I auditioned several options for binding for Gramercy & Friends (scroll down & check it out). By far the striped binding was preferred. LeeAnna suggested adding a pop of orange piping to the binding. I like the idea but haven't tried that technique, so I needed to test it.

Binding test with piping

I used the same stripe I'm considering for Gramercy and an orange print I found in my stash. I know I need a solid, not a print, for the piping in Gramercy, probably Kona School Bus, so I'll have to get some. I used Susie's Magic Binding method and it worked pretty well. I also used up the very last scrap of my Gramercy focus print.

Now another question for you:
Are striped bindings becoming cliché?  Why or why not?

  1. I don't think striped binding is a cliche, I think it looks lovely and if I could cut and sew straight enough I'd use it myself! The black looks great with a pop of orange so you should definitely use it here!

  3. I just cut a striped binding for a wall hanging, don't care if it's cliche, it's my quilt. Love the orange piping.

  5. Love your binding test. As to stripe bindings... I don't care about trends. I just do what I like. So I have no idea if they are cliche or not. Do what you like. :)

  6. Not cliche--we just all have good taste. Somehow striped bindings contain the quilt and if they coordinate well with the fabrics without repeating them, they just seem to add a certain spark. Maybe it's because they add a pattern that really shows up--prints sometimes get lost and solids can look flat (even though both can look fine, too). I really like the piped edge for your quilt.

  8. I love striped bindings if the color makes the quilt top pop or adds interest to the whole. I prefer mine narrow and filled. I also like your piping addition to your test.
