These Bleeding Reds

Help!

I'm planning a project that uses several dark red prints. They'll be combined with ecru/beige/ivory neutrals.

I ran them through a warm water wash & rinse cycle (no detergent) with a color catcher and they bled a lot.  So I did it again.  And again.  Still bleeding.

Does anyone have a recommendation for how to handle this? A product to set the color to keep them from bleeding any more? Overnight soak? Or just more cycles in the washer? Detergent? Any advice or suggestions would be welcome, thanks.

  1. Synthrapol is what was recommended to me in the past when I had this issue. I purchased through Amazon, but I think it can often be found locally at Walmart. Good luck!

  2. I was going to suggest Synthrapol as well. When I was taking a fabric dyeing class they suggested using it. As I recall, reds are the worst for bleeding.

  3. I agree with the Synthrpol. My friend used to soak bleeders in vinegar water as well, but I never tried it.

  4. Try the product RETAYNE.....this should be used to prewash any fabric that you believe will bleed when washing. Our Quilt of Valor group uses this for any red fabric especially the red backings!....GOOD LUCK!

  5. Retayne has yet to fail me. I do make sure the water gets to 140 F as the instructions recommend.

  6. Food for thought: Did you put some white fabric in with the red? Just because there is some red on that last Color Catcher, it doesn't necessarily mean that it would have deposited on the white.
