Dr. Seuss's Pickle Dish

My husband rarely comes into the sewing room, and when he does, he rarely has anything to say about whatever I'm working on. But this weekend was different.

Nine Pickle Dish blocks are pieced and on the wall now. DH commented that they look like something from Dr. Seuss.

Huh? Really?!
I asked him what it is about this project that reminds him of Dr. Seuss. He said "the stripes."

I don't see any connection, but then I've been immersed in Pickle Dish as a quilting project so maybe I can't distance myself enough to see the Dr. Seuss connection. What do you think?

Can you see what he's talking about? If so, please share, because I can't see any connection at all.

  1. These blocks are looking great Jan. Your curved piecing is spot on as usual! I think what your husband may be seeing is the red and white arcs....they may look like the "Cat in the Hat"'s hat possibly?

  3. I just did a quick Google image search for Dr. Seuss stripes. It does seem that the illustrations use a lot of stripes, but especially red and white for Cat in the Hat as Kevin mentions above.

  5. The Cat In The Hat! We read that to our daughter every night until the point she could recite it word for word. But it wouldn't have struck me when I look at your quilt. I think of pickles. No, REAL pickles! In fact I think I need to go ear a gherkin right now!

  7. I definitely see what Hubby is talking about. These are very much the colors that Seuss illustrated with.

  8. The red and white stripes likely remind him of the hat on the "cat in the hat" story!

  9. I think the stripes are definitely the foci in each block. The bright colors are cheery and have a childlike feel. I never read Dr. Seuss books to my children and am reading many of them to my 4 year old granddaughter. I think of even the ABC book and the sing-songy feel to it and how we love to act silly as we read.

  12. If you google a picture of The Cat in the Hat, you will see that his hat is red and white striped and kind of curvy. So there is a resemblance there. That's not a bad thing! Your quilt will be a fun one regardless!
