Chasing a Squirrel

I saw something on Pinterest the other day. It caught my attention, as squirrel projects do, and I had to drop everything and pursue it.

It was made with selvages. I don't collect selvages, but I have some 1-1/2" strips and I can easily cut more.

I sewed strips into pairs, then cut them into 4-1/2" lengths, and sewed two pairs together for a block. Here are the starter blocks on my design wall.

Meh, it's okay, kind of juvenile.

What if I limit the palette to just warm colors?

Much better. I really like where this is going.

The original inspiration photo was nothing like this, but that doesn't matter anymore. This project has grabbed my attention in a way that nothing has lately and it feels good to focus on something. I cut more warm-colored strips and I'm making more blocks, so we'll see where this goes.

  1. It's always fun when a project grabs our attention and lets us play. Great choice to use only warm colors.

  2. Any inspiration is a good thing! Taking an idea and making your way-to suit you is what it's all about in my opinion!

  3. Looking forward to seeing where you go with this. I have a lot of 1.5" strips cut for various projects that could be squirrel-ized for something new.

  4. Lots of fun to play with an idea--even if it takes you down an unexpected path :)

  5. Haha, I can totally relate to your Squirrel moment. I had one this weekend - I saw a Trip Around the World quilt and just couldn't get the idea out of my head. I really like the 'warm' version a lot...looking forward to see where this goes :-)

  6. I really like BOTH versions. Regarding the one that you called "juvenile"... I would just call that cheerful. Enjoy your new project!

  7. How interesting to see the difference between the bright colors and the warm colors. I do like both but they create such different vibes - My preference is for the warms. Looking forward to see what comes of this!

  8. Who knew that squirrels would be so important in the time of Corona? Seems like so many of us are stepping away from our "regular" quilting schedule and just sewing what calls us right this minute. I'm so glad this fun little block has sparked your creativity! :)

  9. It’s a DrEAMi for sure! Love those drop Everything and chasing squirrels. They tend to bring back the joy don’t they? You’ll have to think about linking this up on the last Saturday of April!
