Now that all the blocks are complete for Gramercy & Friends, I've laid them out on the design wall.
I've been moving the blocks around. What do you think of this layout?
I'm trying to avoid having the same fabric in two blocks next to each other. I'm also trying for balance in value placement - some of the blocks "read" lighter and some read darker or bolder, so I'm spreading them around so they don't look too heavy all in one area. Also, there are several blocks with orange or gold in the light background fabrics, and I'm trying to spread those around, too.
Hmm, looking at this photo, maybe I should switch the bottom right block and the one above it.
Sorry for the badly lit photo - I can't back up any farther from my design wall. This layout stretches from the ceiling to about 8" up from the floor, and it's always dark down near the floor. Plus the cutting table is in the way, you can see part of it at the bottom.
This week I hope to get the sashing done and maybe get the flimsy together. If I can do that, I can count the fabrics out in February!

Nicely balanced, especially if you make the switch. Tough task when dealing with different size blocks.
ReplyDeleteI love the colors and your quilt! I think you should switch the bottom 2 also. But it still looks great!
ReplyDeleteI think the layout is nicely balanced. I think that this part of quilt top piecing can be a lot of fun; I try to treat it like a puzzle.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great!! Have you taken a black and white photo of it? When I am in doubt about a layout, a black and white photo will typically give me a direction to go in or will show me that I've hit a balance. I just love this quilt! :)
ReplyDeleteI love it. How are you going to sash the larger blocks so they fit?
ReplyDeleteIf you move any blocks, I'd exchange the lower right block with the 2nd one on the 3rd row. I can't tell value in the photo, but that would exchange a darker for a lighter. I'm thinking if you exchange the lower right for the one above it, the center squares of the two blocks would be distracting. But maybe not. Hard to tell until you do it.
I like the idea of switching the bottom right block with something else. Other than that it looks great!
ReplyDeleteGreat finish.. I love the fabrics, and the look of all the blocks together seems balanced! Linda
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt! My only thought on block placement is that you have two blocks that read like an "X" in the bottom left. Maybe switch one of them ?
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt, it's going to be stunning when it's all together.
ReplyDeleteI like the layout you have. It is very subtle and gorgeous mix of blocks.
ReplyDeleteThis is so pretty... I love quilts with blocks of different sizes. The 2 X blocks in the lower left also caught my eye - but not in a "drive me crazy" kind of way.
