Tiny Guitar Picks Plus

Well, that was a quick finish! From blocks on the wall in my last post to a finished baby quilt today.

I had almost enough of the Tiny Guitar Picks print for the back. A little piecing made the back large enough and more interesting.

I quilted it with an all-over meander, fast and easy, shown here on the back.

This quilt finished at 30 x 42" and will go to Operation Shower. Maybe to a musical family, but really, it's just a geometric print in boy colors so it could go to any family.

Blocks on the Wall

Sometimes simple is more effective than complicated.
This should be a quick finish to get it to the flimsy stage.

Sandy Sent Photos

My friend Sandy - an outstanding long arm quilter - has been working on my WIGSP and my Corona Medallion.

She moved out of state a couple years ago, but whenever we drive to Florida we pass through her town and get to see her. The plan was for her to work on my quilts and we would pick them up on the way home from Florida on the 17th. Well, hurricane Sally cancelled our trip, but Sandy has my quilts finished and she sent photos.

WIGSP was a Piecing Group project hand pieced by many friends over several years. Here's a tease of the quilting at the center of the quilt, where the colors in the hexies are the lightest. She quilted a different motif in each hexie and continuous curves in the black triangles. Exactly what I was hoping for and I love it!

Sandy does only custom quilting, no pantos. I am beyond thrilled with what she's done for my Corona Medallion.

Sandy's sister is coming to STL soon and will bring these quilts; I'll meet up with her to get them. I can't wait to get them back and see them live!

Not Quite Ready for the Design Wall

Another baby boy quilt...  I've had this Tiny Guitar Picks fabric in my stash for awhile. I think it was a Paducah find from a couple years ago.

The plan is for simple squares of the print alternated with plus blocks. It'll be another quilt for Operation Shower.

Bee Blocks

Even though STLMQG hasn't met live in awhile, the Sew Bee Its are still active. Since I thought I would be moving away this year, I told the girls I'd still participate as long as I'm still in St. Louis. Well, I'm still here so I'm still participating. I sure do miss meeting up with them, though.

A few of the members got together in July and turned in blocks from earlier in the year. Here are the ones since July. Left to right, for Gayle, Judy, and Marie.

Judy supplied the fabrics and pattern for hers. Gayle sent a link to the pattern and asked us to sign up for a color so she'd get the variety she needs. Marie sent the pattern and one piece of the color, and we were to follow that color for guidance but make it scrappy.

The most recent block is for Theresa. She sent a link to the pattern and asked for a scrappy low volume background and strong black and white prints for the center. Orange was among the colors she suggested for the petals, and I was able to find some in my stash that coordinated nicely. This block required close attention to the instructions, but I really like it.

I have no idea when we'll get together again, but I'm caught up and I'll have their blocks for them if/when we do. Or if they want, I'll mail the blocks to them.

Although I miss getting together, I'm glad we're still making blocks for each other. Sometimes it's nice to have a small project that can go together in a couple hours. I didn't sign up to hand out this year because I thought I'd be gone, so I'll have to find out if they still have an open month that needs to be filled. Otherwise I'll just skip handing out this year and we'll go on to next year.

Cozy Sampler Quilts at Kat and Cat Quilts

 Check this out -

https://katandcatquilts.blogspot.com/2020/10/cozy-sampler-quilts.html

Kat from Kat and Cat Quilts was able to use a couple of tops I sent for Covered in Love. Ray quilted them, and Kat posted about them yesterday. Check out her post!

Finished Log Cabin Triangles

Finished except for sewing down the sleeve to hang it.

I think this will lighten up the dark family room hallway nicely, and will certainly look more modern than the khaki and hunter green bear paw quilt that was there. This quilt is bigger and fills the entire space. I'll get a photo once the sleeve is attached and the quilt is hung.

This is the largest quilt I've ever spiral quilted, but the quilting went smoothly. I used a straw colored thread on the top, just enough darker than the low volume background to show up slightly.

No one will ever see the back, but even the back turned out well, no puckers or pleats anywhere.

I named this quilt Lighten Up.  Fitting for both its purpose and for 2020, don't you think?

A Comment Problem

Lately comments that readers have left on my posts have not been coming into my email as usual. If you have left a comment recently and I haven't replied, this is why. I'm sorry.

A couple years ago when this was happening to a lot of Blogger users, the solution was to "subscribe to comments for this blog." I've searched around in Settings and the option to send comments to email is turned on and the mail address listed is correct.

I don't know if this is related, but one of my followers who subscribes to my blog by email stopped receiving posts in July and then suddenly got one huge email with all the posts from July 10 to late September. How could that happen? Now it seems fine and because she gets my blog by email, I'm getting her comments in my email. But not comments that are left by others who subscribe via other means.

Is anyone else having trouble like this? Is this just another hiccup with the new version of Blogger?

If anyone has a suggestion for how to fix this, please let me know.

Around and Around And Around...

My Log Cabin Triangles quilt needs spiral quilting, starting at the center of the diamond. Here's the flimsy:

I have a template I made awhile back that I use to mark the center of the spiral. I start the walking foot quilting on about the third ring, going clockwise. When you go clockwise, you get closer to the edge of the quilt with each round.

With the spiral off-center in the quilt top, eventually you'll get to one edge of the quilt first. This is an excellent time to check the bobbin. From this point, each round is broken up by one edge, then two edges, etc. until only the corners of the quilt are left. In the corners, it's easy to just use the guide to gauge the lines of quilting.

You'll notice that my guide is upside down to the left of the needle. Only one guide came with this machine, intended to be placed to the right of the needle, but in order to stitch around clockwise the guide needs to be on the left. Installing it upside down worked just fine. By keeping the tip of the guide on the previous line of stitching, I was able to get nice even stitch lines.

After working on this for several days, I had all the walking foot quilting done. Then I came back in with the free motion foot and very carefully and slowly quilted over the markings for the center of the spiral.

Not bad. A few bobbles and wobbles, but nothing to complain about.

Hopefully I can get this bound and add a sleeve this week so I can hang it in the dark spot in my family room.

LCT Finished Flimsy

My Log Cabin Triangle blocks are now a finished flimsy. I like it. All that low volume negative space will definitely lighten up the dark hallway where I want to hang this.

I'll spiral quilt it as I have the other LCT quilts I've made, with the spiral starting in the center of the gold diamond. The result will be much more modern than the khaki and hunter green bear paw quilt I have hanging in that space now.

This is a fast and easy pattern. If you're interested, click on the 2016 QOV block tab above for the tutorial.

I've made two-color versions and three color versions, and both are effective. My first was blue and magenta. My QOV version was red-white-blue and gold. Wouldn't a Log Cabin Triangles quilt be cute in turquoise and coral with white-based low volume logs? Or cranberry and charcoal, with pale grey logs. It would work in sports team colors, too. Border optional.
