I ran out of pins, but after getting more I finally got the basting finished and started quilting. I'm quilting it in a spiral starting at the center of the motif.
Around and around and around... Just keep going... I do think this style of quilting suits this piecing layout, but it sure is tedious. Music helps!
I used Connecting Threads (no affiliation) 50 wt. cotton thread in a pale grey called Silver. It's nice for quilting but a little thick for piecing. I have a lot of trouble with thread breakage with some types of fine threads on this machine, but much less breakage with CT thread, so for continuous quilting like spiraling around, CT was my preferred choice.
There are plenty of wobbles and bobbles but overall the quilting looks fine.
Maybe I'll be able to get it trimmed and bound this week.
Those very central portions of the spiral are always the trickiest. It looks good and I definitely agree some good music, a podcast, or audio book help the time pass by nicely when doing this kind of quilting.
ReplyDeleteSuch a cheerful quilt in those colors and the circular quilting is perfect for that pattern!
ReplyDeleteGood music is an idea - I'll have to try that. I imagine the spiral gets easier the further out you go. Thanks for linking with Design Wall Monday, I like to see what you are working on. Judy
ReplyDeleteCongrats on all the progress on the UFO. The concentric circles turned out nicely. Have a very Happy Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteI was too chicken to do this on the baby quilt I basted, but want to try the spiral soon. Mine will definitely have lots of wobbles and bobbles. I find a Microtex needle is best for quilting, no matter the thread.
ReplyDeleteOh your log cabin looks so great - what a lot of work. The spiralling looks wonderful though. And your previous quilt is clearly very much appreciated, what a winner!
ReplyDeleteGood lookin' spiral! The spacing between the lines is key, I think. Too close and it will take FOREVER (ask me how I know...)
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about Connecting Threads 50 wt. It's thicker than Aurifil's 50 wt and seems heavy for piecing, but works well for quilting. Their prices are sure good. Personally, I don't need the 8,435 different colors that Aurifil offers, but I do really like their threads. More importantly, my Juki likes them.
You are doing great on finishing those UFO's. I love the quilting you did on this one. I have to get busy and get some of mine done. Still too much to do for others first.
