Last week I made a couple of test Dresden Plate blocks.
I think I got everything worked out for my project
except for the alignment of the points.
Here are photos of an unfinished block to compare the alignment.
The question is, should the points be oriented at 12, 3, 6, and 9?
Or should the V's?
Points:
V's:
Side by side comparison:
These blocks will have snowballed corners in the actual project. Here's a mock-up:
These blocks will not be next to each other;
they'll be separated by alternate blocks in a checkerboard pattern.
Do you have a preference? Why?
I want the light backgrounds to look round-ish in the actual quilt.
Does one of these layouts achieve that better than the other?
Thanks for your input.

I always place the points at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 spots. I think of it as the plate is pointing N, E, S and W. I love your Dresden plates. It's going to be a beautiful quilt.
ReplyDeleteI like the "V" option if you are going for "rounder" rather than pointy-er. I agree that this will be a very pretty quilt!
ReplyDeleteI like the "V" option, personally. Either way, it's going to be a beautiful quilt. Happy sewing! Andrea
ReplyDeleteI like the points at 12, 3, 6, and 9 because it gives the eye a bit more space between the Dresden plate points and the snowballed corners.
ReplyDeleteOnly you would think things through this thoroughly! I find the Vs more pleasing, but I can't tell you why.
ReplyDeletePoints at the 12, 3 etc. as there is more space on the white fabric to accommodate the extra fabric that are the points.
ReplyDeleteI like the V's, but can't put it into words. If it helps I am very OCD about balance and evenness, so maybe that's why?
ReplyDeleteI think with the points at 12/6 it looks like it is standing up to attention whereas the v's make it look more relaxed. I vote for V.
ReplyDeleteI like points but either will be lovely.
ReplyDeleteI like the "V". For some reason it looks rounder and softer to me. Can't wait to see what you choose.
ReplyDeleteLovely blocks! I also go for the V arrangement. The points at 3,6,9, & 12 accentuate the diamond shape rather than giving the rounder look you are wanting.
ReplyDeletePoints. I feel like it goes with the strong angles of the snowballs"
ReplyDeleteI vote for V's but I'm not sure it will make much difference. I LOVE your alternative 1st Sat project.
